We also utilize historic maps and survey data to recreate the historic cultural landscape: former property boundaries, former roadways, battlefield movements, etc. This creates a fuller context for any identified cultural resources, as well as a potential sensitivity map for archaeological resources. If historic data quality is high enough, we can render not only the former landscape, but the former building landscape in 3D. We use this data to create virtual streetscapes and an immersive experience in the historic landscape, either through video or our augmented reality system.
As part of our analysis of historic & pre-development landscapes, AECOM Burlington’s geospatial data management team has the capability to recreate land surfaces as they existed at different points in history. By using historic topographic data in comparison with modern topographic data, a cut/fill analysis can be completed, resulting in a map of where the original ground surface is potentially either truncated, preserved by a cap of historic fill, or at current grade.
