Each state has its own set of curation guidelines that must be abided by before an archaeological assemblage will be accepted at state museums or long-term storage facilities. These considerations often include specifics about how artifacts are labeled with provenience information, how they are packaged, and which methods of packaging are acceptable.
AECOM’s NE/SE Cultural Resources laboratory staff is well versed in understanding and adhering to each state’s guidelines. Additionally, our staff is undertaking a massive collections management project that includes setting up our own facility to meet Pennsylvania’s standards for long-term material culture storage. We are also developing a barcoding system to individually track artifact boxes, bags, and single artifacts, as needed.
